What American issue should i write my research paper on?

It can't be anything overly done, like abortion or the death penalty. It needs to be something recently in the news and also something i can pick a side on, since its a "persuasive" research paper.

What American issue should i write my research paper on?
The actual effects and standards of hate crime laws in America. I did a research paper on this issue while in college and started out trying to determine what side of the issue I should be on. After researching it, I discovered that the actual justice system is still pondering this as well. What the media and camera seekers tell you about hate crime laws and actions that constitute hate crimes are not so cut and dry once the all the facts are presented. In fact, I found several cases in which a "hate crime" was committed, but was chose not to be charged as such because it did not fit the profile of popular opinion on hate crimes. I also found that some states were trying to decide if keeping hate crime laws were worth it because most states already have laws to impose harsher sentences and the prosecutors were finding it more difficult to convict people charged with a hate crime. Also, it was harder to sustain convictions of hate crimes on appeals because of several issues mostly contained to double jeopardy where defendants were actually being tried twice for the same crime and excessive prosecution.

With the current racial climate in America these days and the media's incessant reporting of such, it was a refreshing outlook and provided perspective.

My professor also agreed and uses the argument frequently in his debate and argumentative writing courses.

Reply:Do something you're interested in. It's always ten times easier to write about something you're passionate about than it is to write about something that bores to to death. Sometimes it's also good to write about something that affects you personally or your family or someone you know.

The only person who can answer this question is you. Nobody here can tell you what *you'll* be interested in or passionate about. The only answers you'll get here are answers from people with things that *they're* passionate about.

Reply:How about illegal immigration? I bet you could find a lot of information on it. That might be too much though because its so complex. - Dee posted that right before me lol
Reply:RACISM (actually it's colorism). People are afraid to touch this issue, and tying it into global trade, environmental destruction, war, etc would be spectacular. Speak to some minority students in your school about their experiences in school and at home, etc.
Reply:Is the concept of "separation of church and state" still relevant or out dated?

The growing Conservative Christian movement : are wanting to push laws and the use of the word "God" that are supported by their religious beliefs. (outlaw abortion, gay marriage, some areas have laws that let pharmacist decide if they want to dispense birth control pills based on their own personal beliefs, use of the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer in school, teaching Intelligent Design along with Darwinism, etc.)

Compare/Contrast how this is to admitted religious countries (such as Iran) that freely admit that their laws are based on their religious teachings and do not have a separation of church and state.
