[opening paragraph]Athens and Sparta were the two major city-states of Ancient Greece. Although they were both a part of the Greek nation, their ideals on government and military varied greatly. The Athenians chose direct democracy as their form of government, whilst the Spartans chose to use a monarchy with a limited oligarchy. For military actions the Athenians favored naval power, while the Spartans favored land armies. These were not the only differences between Athens and Sparta, but two of the major issues that made Sparta and Athens as different as they were. [opening paragraph]
