I can't get it the first time.
Usually the more times I read it the more understanding I get.
The thing is, I'd like to know what's the averga enumber of times people read a research paper to be able to formulate their own hypothesis on it?
How many times must you read a scientific research paper before you get it?
About three. It takes me a while to understand since it's normally so dense. The scientific vocab that's required that you may not already know and the ones you do you start to question yourself about. It's kind of annoying which is why I try to find a summary just as side note to guide me through what I should be expected to know after I completely waste my time trying to decrypt gibberish.
Reply:Okay, first understand what you're trying to get from the article. Unless you're looking into debunking the article you don't need to care about the methods in a scientific journal, nor do you need to dwell much on the statistical reporting section.
Scan the introduction then jump to the results and discussion. Bingo, you've got the article covered.
Reply:As many as it takes, sadly.
Reply:Depends on the type of paper for me. Being a psych major (recently graduated), I find Psych papers easiest to read. I usually read each section separately and sometimes I get the section the first time around, other times I have to re-read a few times before it actually sinks in...
Good luck on yours though!

Reply:The first time, nothing sinks in.The second time, it starts to sound familiar. On the third try, I vaguely understand the message.
Reply:If you get it first time that is remarkable! You just keep going - but the good news is, the more papers you read, the quicker you understand. I think it is something to do with learning the discourse and using it yourself.
One tip I've discovered to formulate the hypothesis for almost any serious research paper, is to read and reread until there is some familiarity; then compose a question, as if you were asking an exam question, about the topic. Very often the question contains the hypothesis. Try it!
