What is required in a thesis statement on a research paper?

my brain is like dying i can't remember at all. it's for a poet research paper over langston hughes.

What is required in a thesis statement on a research paper?
Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is going to be about.

You should try to be specific, for example, don't just say "Langston Hughes was a prolific poet." A more functional thesis statement would be, "Langston Hughes made an important impact on the African American community through the powerful language and imagery in his poetry." Or, even more specific, "Langston Hughes' poem, [insert title here], used the idea of [blank] in order to [blank]."

You don't want to be too broad in your thesis statement.

My suggestion would be to start with a working thesis. This can be broad, like the first example. Write a sentence that simply states what you are going to write about.

Once you've written your paper, go back to your working thesis and expand or narrow it to cover what you have written in your paper.

In most cases, "Langston Hughes was a great poet" as a working thesis will turn into something like "The poetry of Langston Hughes was pivitol in creating strength in the African American community."

Hope that helps a little. :)

Reply:It has to state the point that you are trying to prove in less than 2 sentences. All the evidence you provide in your paper has to connect back to this thesis.
