I am doing a research paper on serial killers, need help to argue that serial killers are made, not born. also, need help with thesis! any ideas?
Any supporting arguments that serial killers are made, not born for research paper?
I agree wtih you that serial killers, which are sociopathic in nature are made and not born. If you were to check the back grounds of virtually all of the serial killers, you would most likely find that they suffered a lot of things in their lives during the formation of their personality; be it abuse(sexual, verbal, physical, psychological) neglect, or mistreatment of some sort. Jeffery Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Zodiac Killer, green river killer, all suffered traumas in their early years.
Reply:I have read that these types of behaviors could be genetically related. Try www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/noto...

Reply:God gave us freewill and holds us accountable for our actions. If we couldn't help what we do then we are not accountable for our actions.
We can argue that our genes made us do it or are environment.
We know to many people who come out of very dysfunctional family's who do quite well. then there is others who have every chance and they turn out to be losers.
The court of the land holds us responsible for what we do, so they have to believe we are accountable for our actions.
Reply:I guess this would have to do with the nature nurture debate. Our environment effects us through the experiences we encounter. Violence becomes a lot more exceptable to us when we see it in our home and in our society. I person who wittnesses a father beating his mother and telling her she deserves it because she an idiot and such, may learn women are of little value and that it is exceptable to beat them. This is to do with the socialisation process. People who grow up in societies that strap bombs to themselves and blow up everyone teach their children it is ok too force your view on people through murder.
Often our patriarchial society is associated with voilence because boys are socialised to have a greater sense of entitlement than women. They donot talk about their problems as much as a women through their socialisation and a much higher level of violence is accepted and sometimes expected from a male. Things like pornography teaches men that women are sex objects and devalues them as people. Bullying at school is also associated with these acts where people feel excluded and persecuted and carry an anger that is released destrucively.
Reply:It shouldn't take much, since a lot of serial killers have siblings, and if they were born, they wouldn't be the only ones in thier families that kill. thier parents or grandparents would have homicidal tendencies, as well.
you may want to read about psychologist Julian Rotter, who developed the locus of control scale, and the books "the evil that men do" and "dark dreams" by former FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood.
another good textbook is "signature killers" by former profiler and homicide detective Robert Keppel. this is the guy who eventually caught Ted Bundy. and finally, "sexual homicide: patterns and motives" by Robert Ressler, another former profiler
Reply:I wouldn't argue that 'all' serial killers are made not born. There are people who were abused as children and didn't turn out to be killers and there are killers who had normal childhoods. It seems most often nature and nuture both play a part.
Reply:Search: serial killers nature or nuture, pick the first one. A few facts are the limbic system controls certain behaviors and many serial killers DON'T HAVE ONE also many had head injuries that have been attributed to their aggression. (this is well known serial killer or not) And being abused, forced to perform sex acts etc can cause this behavior. But look that up so you'll have a source.
Reply:abusive childhood, violent movies. those two things deal with the environmental perspective. I wouldn't argue that it's all nurture, it's a combination of both.
